Not so long ago the saying among motorcyclists was “there is no replacement for displacement.”

In fact, on CVO models the 1800cc (110 cu in) engine produced copious amounts of torque and high horsepower numbers… it was the key to happiness and a big smile.  It’s H-D’s analog approach to a mostly digital world.

But, let’s start from the beginning.

Remember the day you sat in your basement, in your bedroom with the lights off, driving the stereo speakers to the point of distortion, listening to music that energized you and soothed your soul at the same time?

Well get READY!  Along comes the 2012 models and we’re talking about a one-hundred watt smile which emanates from the Harman/Kardon Advanced Audio system.  The kids these days might be listening on earbuds, but the H-D creators are clearly freaks for sound.  Who says high-end motorcycle audio has to be difficult?!  What’s coming out of the speakers on the new models is positively mind-blowing.

I’m financially challenged, but even I was doing the calculation on a new 2012 CVO Street Glide from Harley-Davidson…  New this year is a second 100W per channel amplifier and bridged tweeters mounted in the saddlebag lids.  That’s a total of eight speakers and two power amplifiers kicking out 400W of lower mid-range and crisp highs of crashing cymbals.  Not quite the gut-kicking bass of JBL concert speakers during a U2 concert, rather it’s like a warm ooze embrace of a digital sound field.  It’s the aural grease you’ll need to make it through the day!

The new 2012 CVO Road Glide Custom gets a boosted 100W (up from 80W) amplified Harman/Kardon system too.  The speakers are not the $3000 a pair Dynaudio BM15A’s you’d find in a music studio, but new this year are the two-way 5×7’s for booming down the boulevard.  If I had either of these motorcycles I’d park it in the garage and shut all the windows because the music tracks on this system mean you’ve got to crank the volume – up enough – that you’d be in the same room with the band.  Yeah, it’s that good.

For many riders they will stop right there when reviewing the new 2012 models and look for the check book.  But there is more…  H-D standardized on the Twin Cam 103 engine (with automatic compression release) as standard equipment on Softail, touring and most Dyna models.   H-D launched the V-Rod 10th Anniversary Edition and the new Dyna Switchback.  Some additional 2012 highlights include:

  • A Security Package that pairs Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Smart Security System with proximity-based, hands-free security fob is available for all 2012 V-Rod, Dyna, Softail, Touring and CVO models. The Security Package is standard equipment on CVO models and on the Road Glide Ultra, the Electra Glide Ultra Limited and the Road King Classic. The Security Package is a factory-installed option for all other models.
  • The Night Rod Special is updated with new tapered tail section, lighter-weight wheels, an inverted front fork and improved ergonomics. Harley-Davidson celebrates a decade of power cruising with the V-Rod 10th Anniversary Edition motorcycle, finished in Brilliant Silver Pearl bodywork.  All V-Rod models will carry V-Rod 10th Anniversary badges.
  • The new Dyna Switchback combines hard saddlebags and a windshield with the eager handling and Twin Cam 103 performance of the Dyna chassis. It’s a custom-touring bike ready for a long weekend trip, until the detachable bags and windshield are removed.
  • The Fat Boy and Fat Boy Lo have a new reduced-reach handlebar for more-comfortable ergonomics. The Softail Deluxe and Heritage Softail Classic will be available with a new optional “tubeless” Chrome Aluminum Profile Laced wheel option for ease of tire replacement and repair.
  • On Touring models, the Twin Cam 103 is equipped with an oil cooler. All Touring models except the Ultra Limited will offer a new “tubeless” Chrome Aluminum Profile Laced wheel option.
  • The Sportster line cuts across a broad range of riders with models ranging from the XR1200X to the SuperLow to Dark Custom roadsters like the Iron 883, Nightster and Forty-Eight. The Sportster 1200 Custom can be personalized for fit, function and style with H-D1 factory customization, and new 1200 Custom color options have been added to Bike Builder this year.

Harley-Davidson issued a recall notice (NHTSA Campaign ID# 11V037000) for certain 2011 Softail motorcycles manufactured from June 7, 2010 through October 8, 2010.

The issue is on motorcycles which had a security system kit installed as an accessory.  The Body Control Module (BCM) involved (P/N 69991-11 and 69993-11) has a case where they may not have been properly sealed during production and an improper seal may allow water intrusion into the BCM which might cause an engine stall.

Harley-Davidson will notify owners and dealers and replace the BCM free of charge.  The recall is expected to begin around February 21, 2011.  Owners may contact H-D at 414.343.4056 for more information.

Harley announced back in May a major restructuring of its operations in York, Pennsylvania and the possible move to another U.S. location.

The two plants in York employ more than 2600 employees.  I previously posted a bit of a tongue-n-cheek letter that was picked up in the local York, PA., press which recommended H-D to consider coming to Oregon, but I never heard back from the company…

At any rate, the reasons cited (my interpretation of reports) for a potential H-D move from York were:

  1. Inefficiencies – it takes too many employees too long to manufacture a motorcycle
  2. Salaries – cost structure is too high, meaning lower wages are needed to reduce the overall cost structure
  3. Economy – declining sales mean further job cuts required as production/output needs to align with sales
  4. IAMAW – in 2007 the York plant went on strike and negotiated a 12% wage increase over 3 years.  H-D received few concessions and lost 16 production days which disrupted other assembly lines. At a time when they need to reduce the cost structure by $100M one of the largest cost contributors (wages) is set to steadily rise.

For those of you unfamiliar, the plant in York opened in 1973, however, some of the buildings date back to World War II.   It is the largest H-D manufacturing facility and the Softail factory recently received a $145M upgrade investment. The plants cover 230 acres and have over 1.5 million square feet under roof where the workers assemble the Touring and Softail models as well as “SE” limited production factory-custom motorcycles.  This plant also has the dubious honor of being the most visited by a sitting U.S. President  (Bush and Clinton) who’s administration’s leveraged the plant for free-trade discussions.

It’s been reported that after a week of H-D executives visiting various locations the short list was announced as four possible sites. Drum roll please…… they are:

  1. Shelbyville, Kentucky, located between Louisville and Lexington;
  2. Murfreesboro, Tennessee, located just southeast of Nashville;
  3. Shelbyville, Indiana, located southeast of Indianapolis;
  4. Kansas City, Missouri where Harley already has a major facility

It’s no accident that two of the four states (Tennessee and Indiana) vying for the new factory are right-to-work states and will have offered H-D numerous incentives to relocate.  I would imagine items like Investment Advantages which allows for the waiver on income/excise/sales taxes etc.; Enterprise Zones which provide property tax incentives or abatement; Vocational Rehab Services for employees who need relocation training etc., and the concession list surely goes on.  And at the same time officials in PA., are working feverishly to convince H-D to stay although they don’t have a blank sheet of paper to work from and it may limit what they can offer up.  In 2008, Harley employees paid over $2M in local taxes and should the plant relocate it would be a major budget hit to the municipalities.  The H-D “spin machine” continues to state that staying in Pennsylvania is the preferred option, yet in the same breath they also cite inefficiencies and cost structure issues with the York facility.

You know the mood these days isn’t just about banks or exec bonuses being Public Enemy No. 1.  I think what disturbs Americans of all ideological persuasions is the fear that almost everything, not just government, is fixed or manipulated by some powerful hidden hand, from commercial transactions as trivial as the sales of a Seahawk football ticket to cultural forces in the news media.  What this recession has crystallized for many of us is the sinking sensation that the American game is rigged — that the system is in hock to “the interests of powerful lobbyists or the “wealthiest few” who have run the “system” too long.

It’s hard to avoid the sense that H-D is wasting time trying to appease people who can’t be appeased.  Is H-D really committed to moving the York plant or is this about the art of a negotiation… where they preview and think about taking every new concession.  Isn’t it really just an indicator that any state can be punked?

It’s about as “old skool” and chopped as Harley can be out of the factory.  The wizards introduced the new Softail “CROSS BONES”.  It’s part of the Dark Custom series of bikes and designed to bring back bad boy roots or your memories of living the dream. 

Very cool mini “ape-hanger” bars, solo spring-seat, fat-bob tires with primer paint and drilled-out metal parts…stripped and raw are the marketing adjectives.

Now you have a good reason to counter the ‘recession’ pundits and leverage Harley’s 105th anniversary finance package (1.05% APR) to drown out the opinions of the world!

hd_ornamentsJust days before Christmas and in a bit of a panic for some last minute gift ideas?  

Well just in time here are a couple of ideas.  For the more traditional there are tree decorating ornaments on the Harley Davidson site. 

Or for the Harley children there is this cool Kid Craft Softail rocker.  It was inspired by the Softail Deuce and has a leatherette seat, plus a sculpted and chromed front fork to support the handlebar.

But for the selective few and to help bring happiness to those cold, wet and dreary days of winter when the bike is relegated to the garage, yet you need to start and charge the battery…there is the perfect gift that will complete your savvy maintenance skills and “satisfy” your biker babe who wants it all. 

It’s difficult to explain, but here’s a video of the “Vibe Rider”. It brings new meaning to the statement; “Could we just take the long way round”?  

Enjoy watching although it’s unlikely you’ll enjoy it as much as these ladies enjoyed the Vibe Rider contest! 

Caution – If trying this at home, loud pipes will wake the neighbors and it’s strongly suggested to open the garage door every 5-10 min’s to avoid exhaust fume build up.
