Renegade Wheels Owner - Chuck Frederick

He joins an elite club of A-listers who love to flaunt their fabulous machines and high quality wares.

I’m talking about Chuck Frederick, owner of Renegade Wheels.

I was recently contacted by the co-founder of MaleStandard.com, a men’s lifestyle source of information on grooming, dating and other esoteric items that men care about, in regards to an exclusive article about the man behind Renegade Wheels.

It turns out that Renegade Wheels developed a customer set of wheels for Paul Jr. (of OCC fame) Designs of American Chopper and this article covers the story behind the business as well as the new relationship with Paul Jr.

Here is an excerpt:

Q: Circling back around, it’s hard to deny the excitement that is exuding out of you after your trip to Sturgis to showcase your wheels on Paul Jr.’s bike. How did that collaboration come to light?
A: It was a surprise. The collaboration wasn’t something that was pre-planned. Paul Jr. had intended on making his own wheels however he was in a real time crunch and knew he likely would miss his deadline without Renegade’s assistance, so he had Vinnie give us a call. It turned out the timing was great for us and we could get right on them.

Q: Was the custom design specific to just that bike?
A: Yes. Most of Paul Jr.’s bikes are theme or corporate and get very unique one-off wheels.

I’m talking motorcycles not the sought-out customizers that make – “grills” – you know it as mouth bling or Rapper Grillz…i.e. gold teeth!   Sometimes referred to as plates, shines or caps that glitter with diamonds on a person’s upper teeth.

But I’ve digressed… a couple weeks ago I posted an article about Hispanic Trends at H-D and received several comments.  One in particular which was well written and concise came from Carl (CJ) Hanlon of Orlando, FL-based Guilty Customs.  I made a mental note to do more research when I had time on the company and the person behind the custom choppers.

Previously an ex-banker and marketing exec at Disney, CJ spends time these days building affordable custom bikes .  I like their work which is artistic yet not overdone and functional everywhere you look.  CJ doesn’t describe himself as a “master builder” or does he make comparisons with the industry icons, but claims to be just a “Joe builder” with a lot of passion for the industry, a skillful team and a ‘dab’ of talent.

Similar to how music sounds different in everyone’s ears, I’m of the viewpoint that bike style – design, colors and proportions – the overall looks — is a personal matter and is what influenced the custom scene in the first place.  I’m not a fan of $100K+ “theme” bikes from OCC that the corporate world can’t seem to buy enough.  But, good for them as I need something to watch during summer re-runs.  Personally I like old school bobbers that are not overweight or over-hyped, but to each his own.

According to the Motorcycle Industry Council the top 7 commercial bike builders accounted for 91% of all cycles sold in the U.S.  It’s no wonder that today’s custom builders either suffer the fate of a dying breed on one end of the spectrum or go the corporate empire of cookie cutter “choppers” who try and saturate the market on the other end.  Maintaining a profitable middle-ground looks to be a challenge which few seem to achieve.  However, in spite of the economy, Guilty Customs has increased their bike builds.  No assembly line here and the customs are meant to be ridden, not sit in a showroom.

I can only wish for a custom at this point since I’m heavily invested in the Road King, but if and when I make a chopper commit I’ll be considering Guilty Customs.  Keep up the great work CJ.

or_redrocksTalk was about a down turn in attendance.  The economy, you know.  Sure the attendance of Laughlin River Run was down (based on my unscientific estimate), but the beautiful weather, the awesome display of motorcycles, and the backdrop of events in the area brought out plenty of riders for the 27th annual motorcycle rally.

It turns out that bikers are indeed welcome in the little town on the Colorado River!  A nice change given un-friendly events in Daytona and in Snohomish, Wa.  We made the 90-mile trek to Laughlin from our Vegas base camp.  The end of April marks a return of bikers to Casino Drive which for a few days becomes the center of everything motorcycles.  I don’t know about you, but I thought it was easy to get around compared to years past.  A side benefit of smaller crowds I suppose.  The lines to vendor booths were shorter, there were no parking hassles and the overall atmosphere was just more relaxed.  Nice!

There were too many vendors to cover it in detail.  I’ll let the trade rags write about the assortment of “must haves” for your bike. However, I wanted to do a couple of shout-outs.  We grabbed some face-time with “Big Kev” of Sucker Punch Sally’s.  He had the fun meter on high with the “shine” as riders milled about the village of white tents and booths near the casinos.  Thanks for the hospitality and kudos to the SPS team!  I posted previously about who in the chopper industry is going to be the “new” ambassador and still maintain that SPS has the right old school ideas.  Moving on we spent some quality time with Dan Miller of Renegade Wheels to better understand the nuisances of proper wheel fit/placement on baggers. They have some high quality wheels and had a steady line of folks dropping $$ for additional bling.

Conventional wisdom is to post up at the rally, but I had a bit more passion for desert riding near and around Vegas this time around.  We spent more seat time around Lake Mead, the Valley of Fire, Red Rocks Canyon and the Pahrump Valley.  The RRC gets over a 1M visitors each year since it’s only 30 minutes from the strip, but I never get tired of the 13-mile scenic loop drive.  Further up the road is Pahrump which is a gateway into death valley.

rrc_posseBack to the ride out to Laughlin…as we anticipated, LEOs were visible and out enforcing any traffic violations.  Our first encounter was in the town of Searchlight, NV. where Senator Harry Reid was born.  For a town with a population of under 600, it sure had one of the highest saturation patrols I’ve witnessed from Sheriff, State Police, metro police and city LE.  We did a quick gas/water stop and the dialogue with other bikers quickly turned to ticketing for exceeding the speed limit by as little as 2mph in some cases.  A notable top priority for LE was helmet compliance.  Not for just wearing one, but city police were validating that riders had a DOT approved helmet and were aggressively ticketing.  Unfortunate because a lot of folks were getting pulled over.  We managed to idle out of town and not draw attention.

The trip was a great way to recharge after months of cold and rainy weather.  The most notable event?   There was NO event!  There were NO major problems.  No issues with motorcycle clubs and when I checked earlier today there were no motorcycle fatalities!  There were four felony arrests and 20 gross misdemeanor arrests in Laughlin and according to the Mohave News there were a number of accidents in and around Oatman.  In fact there were three within 61 minutes of each other.  But, no fatalities which is all you can hope for with so many riders who show up to revel in the taste and tunes of the desert.
