The wait is over!

According to the Harley-Davidson press release here’s what’s new in 2015:

Freewheeler™ Trike – From its mini ape-hanger handlebar to its bobtail fenders, the Freewheeler trike fuses custom style and easy-handling performance. The all-new rear body shape gives the Freewheeler a low, lean profile.

Braking System for Softail® Models – A new braking system for Softail models delivers improved modulation and responsiveness and decreases hand lever effort by 40 percent. ABS is now standard on all Softail models and optional on the Slim. New front brake components include a rigid four-piston fixed front brake caliper with 34 and 32mm pistons coated to minimize initial displacement, brake pads with high-output friction material, a new master cylinder with a higher mechanical ratio, and a new 300mm front brake rotor. The caliper and master cylinder have been restyled to enhance the looks of each model.

Electra Glide® Ultra Classic® Low / Ultra Limited Low Motorcycles – A package of ergonomic enhancements that offer the lowest seat height and highest rider confidence available in a premium touring bike, combined with a full complement of Project RUSHMORE features and classic Harley-Davidson style.

CVO Street Glide Motorcycle – It’s back!  The CVO Street Glide has a new Boom! Audio system with 600 watts of power streaming through four bi-amped front and rear three-way speakers.  It’s a limited-production bagger to achieve that rolling concert “bubble” with volume and sonic quality that will shock the neighbors. There will be four color options with an intricate paint scheme.

CVO Road Glide Ultra Motorcycle – This was a CVO surprise given the new release of the new 2015 Road Glide and many thought it would be a year before a CVO version would launch.  This a super-premium touring motorcycle with world-class aerodynamics, luxury touring essentials and the performance of a Screamin’® Eagle Twin-Cooled™ Twin Cam 110™ engine.

You might recall that Harley-Davidson previously announced the 2015 Road Glide before Sturgis.  It was also included it as part of this press release:

Road Glide Special® Motorcycle – The Road Glide Special is equipped with premium Boom! ™ Box infotainment, upgraded suspension, and Reflex™ linked brakes with an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS).

Boom! Box 6.5GT Infotainment

For the person that is looking for improved sound quality, or maybe needs additional help in finding points-of-interest or just wants to have the next big thing…  Harley-Davidson has designed a plug- and-play upgrade for the Boom! Box 4.3 standard audio system.

Called the Boom! Box 6.5GT Infotainment System, it’s a technology upgrade for Touring models equipped with the standard radio. It has a brilliant 6.5” display, and features a low distortion 25 watt/channel amplifier that has been optimized for great sound in an open-air environment. The system features can be accessed via the glove-friendly touchscreen, joystick hand controls or with hands-free voice recognition.  Riders can expect cleaner, sharper sound at volumes up to 25% louder than previous Original Equipment radios. The system has a built-in automatic volume control which compensates for the increased noise levels as speed increases, and automatically adjusts the bass and treble for optimal performance.

The MSRP price for the 6.5GT is $1799.95.

The 6.5GT is factory-equipped with AM/FM radio, weather alert, integrated iPod and USB audio device playback, map-based GPS navigation, and has Bluetooth pairing for mobile phones and wireless headsets.  In addition, there is an optional Bike-to-Bike communication, XM weather and traffic services, and other features are just a plug- in module and some additional $$ away.

2014 Road King

During this week’s launch of the new 2014 models, Harley-Davidson stated it has made a monumental shift in the product development approach with Project RUSHMORE.  There was very little in the way of specific or actionable detail about that new development process.

This absence of any detail is most intriguing.

Shouldn’t the motor company share some insight about their cutting-edge manufacturing processes or renewed focus on quality that will provide an even greater market advantage or leave little competitive oxygen?  Sure, they’re using “chrome dipped” marketing words to describe the core ingredient of a new customer-driven product development effort, but in building a better mouse trap it’s a bit abstract to state that the motor company is working with motorcycle enthusiasts to do a better job of bringing their insights and needs to new motorcycles.  What’s different now versus previous years when they listened and collected rider feedback?

Let’s take a closer look at the first one on the list, the new 2014 CVO Road King.  I’ve got a riding buddy who purchased a 2013 CVO model and I’ve been around this style motorcycle a good bit on various rides.  I’ve also been a long term rider/owner of a Road King and can state it’s a nice bike!  One of the key selling points (print and online) for the 2013 CVO Road King was the high-performance audio system.  It was a FIRST on a non-fairing motorcycle and included a 200 watt amplifier to drive speakers in the fairing lowers in front and the saddlebag lids behind.  A cocoon of audio on a Road King!

The first thing I noticed in looking over the stats of the 2014 CVO Road King is that MSRP dropped $1500 from the previous year.   The 2013 is $29,999 and the 2014 is $28,499.

Huh? 

On average, pricing on 2014 models went up 3.5% (yr/yr) and reductions in price rarely happen unless it’s technology/PC related.

The mainstream motorcycle media and press picked up on the Road King price reduction.  But, it was reported as if some kind of magical process appeared at the Harley-Davidson factory and reduced the price.  I’ve scanned numerous reports and NOTHING was written about the – big reveal – fairing lowers and front speakers were removed.  Along with the saddlebag speakers.  And that 8GB iPod – gone.  Or how the 200W high-performance audio amp was removed along with the handlebar controls. 

I’m not trying to be snarky, but did Project RUSHMORE (that new customer-driven product development effort) provide rider feedback that CVO Road King riders felt choked by the lack of bag space on road trips?  Were Road King riders depressed about the lack of space?   Did the CVO Road King owners tell the motor company that it was too difficult to operate the audio system?  Should non-fairing motorcycles be about wind in the face and never have an audio system period?  It would be very interesting to know the facts and what feedback translated into the re-engineering and removal of the audio system.   I suspect that rider feedback had little to do with this decision.

When the 2014 Harley-Davidson marketing collateral states “the road trip will never be the same” they truly mean it for the CVO Road King owners!

2011 CVO Ultra Classic Electric Glide

I’m talking about the Harley-Davidson CVO (Custom Vehicles Operation) division and their customers.

CVO versions take an existing Harley motorcycle, then add a host of additional parts, usually cosmetic but some are mechanical, including the 1,803cc (110 cubic inch) version of the stock Harley motor.  The bikes they design and build are by any definition “mass-produced,” so they’re not true “custom’s” in the purest sense of the word.  But, based on rider demand the CVO division makes specialized versions on a few Harley models each year.  The people who purchase these want to customize their motorcycles but don’t have the time or skills.

But they do have money!

I was out yesterday at lunch and did a local H-D dealer “drive-by” when I noticed they had two 2011 CVO Touring bikes on the show floor:

  1. CVO Street Glide (MSRP: $33,880 (includes shipping costs)) – Asking Price was $36,400
  2. CVO Ultra Classic Electric Glide (MSRP: $36,880 (includes shipping costs)) – Asking Price was $40,300

Whoa!  A $40K Harley-Davidson.  That’s a first.  And neither had the optional 200 Watt “Boom! Audio Bagger” package which would have pushed the asking price even higher.  The CVO models always sell out and I’m sure 2011 will be no different because H-D deliberately under produces to maintain a perception of exclusivity.

So what’s my point?  I think purchasing the CVO takes all the fun away from doing your own customization.  The research, planning, procuring and incremental accessory installations are what provides motorcyclists winter projects and if you purchase a CVO your relegated to just washing it, right?

For example a comparable bike to #2 above is the Electra Glide Ultra Limited which includes the Power Package (103cu in plus ABS/Security) with an asking price of $27,200K (MSRP: $25,280 (includes shipping costs)).  With very similar paint schemes (minus flames) it looks like the dealer is asking about a $13,000 premium for the CVO version.  Sure it has the 110 cu in and several other accessories, but the price difference gives a person a lot of room for upgrades and chrome that you specifically want vs. what the motor company decides you need.  H-D doesn’t care either way as long as you just buy a new 2011 model.

I’m thinking the dealer is wishing for a lot here with their additional mark up during these financial times.  It will be interesting to see how long the CVOs stay on the showfloor as $40K buys a lot these days.
