I must say a seed was planted when I saw a Harley displayed at a tiny PX in Kuwait in 2003

I didn't know it then I was caught up in combating unknown enemies right across the border, but I would have my first HD a year later.

Riding is my relief now of the terrible reality I know and somehow it ends up Benefiting Harley-Davidson

You did it the right way when there are so many wrong ways. I look at the mountain and remember the Episcopal kids. I got married the week of their climb.

A man from work was with the group that slid into the crevasse. He was one of the first in and didn't make it out.

Climbing Mt. Hood may not be dancing with the devil, but he's keeping track.

Great post,

David

@ SFC Donnell—first off thank you for the comments and your service (assuming your online ‘name’ is accurate). Your service is appreciated and had you read more of my previous veteran related posts you’d have come away with a different perspective about me. As to my rants on this post:

#1 – Obama is NOT doing what he said he would. He never promised to send 47,000 more troops – or 9 brigades worth of troops – to Afghanistan, which is what he has done between his February escalation of 17,000 troops and now his December escalation of 30,000 more troops.

#2 – The Al-Qaeda and Soviet comment is a belief that we’re deepening our involvement in a non-winnable situation/war. I don’t have an answer, but the current gov thinking seems to be coming from a line in the movie ‘The International’… “When there’s no way out, go deeper in.”

#3 – I’m pro-capitalism, but I’d say a lot of people feel exactly the same way: misled or perhaps even betrayed by ‘fat cat’ bankers/brokers whose personal bonus/success is on the backs of the disadvantaged and partly to blame for the housing implosion and bank collapses.

#4 – The Bagram Airfield/meal cost ($28) comment was about the massive spending and spiraling of out of control costs to fund all this. If I worked with people and knew what they just had for b-fast was equal to my lasts months income … I’m not sure you’d win me over to be content.

There was NO disrespect meant, implied or inferred on the troops. -mac

I really lost track of what you were ranting about, was it anti capitalist, was it pro Al Qaeda, or both?

Please let me remind you:

As for your complaint of the meals the troops get, that is still a $1.20 breakfast plus shipping and handling costs. Let me give you some insight, I lost 60 pounds in my first 3 months in combat. Soldiers do not get fat, nor do they get rich, nor are they safe, but you are. Have some respect and some sympathy.

Great post Mac. I've always wanted to make this climb. Any attempt I would want to be involved with would be with the expectation of good weather though. I am a bit confused with the current situation as well as the one 3 years ago, why someone would set out knowing a storm was on its way.

My prayers with the 2 remaining up there and all of the families.
